I think I've searched half the internet and finally read this post. At
first, I didn't believe a BIOS update would help. But I've tried so many
things (another distro, with battery, without battery) and then (just
before almost getting desperate) I finally gave the BIOS update a try,
too. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5610 (Aspire 5611-300, Intel Core Duo
T2050).

I've updated the BIOS about two months ago and since then, the laptop didn't 
power off immediately. Yeah! :-)
If someone has the same laptop: I've flashed to BIOS version V3.60, 1.7 MB as 
of 2008/12/08 (yes, more than one year old).
