Sorry for the lack of info, I was not aware of the article @ https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspendHibernateResume
The problem occurs on the way into the sleep state. The screen goes blank (black), and there is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen. After a hard power off, the computer boots as if from a cold boot. The problem is reproducible, Happens every time I have tried it. Sleep has never worked on this computer, with any version of ubuntu. It works with win*****s though I have never seen a flashing caps lock I am now running 9.10, and i think that I have run the suspend testing script (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/SuspendResumeTesting) and it failed in the same way, but am not sure. I will do some debugging as suggested later. Hope this helps.
