The problem occurs on the way into the sleep state. The screen goes
blank (black), and there is a blinking cursor at the top of the screen.
After a hard power off, the computer boots as if from a cold boot.

The problem is reproducible, Happens every time I have tried it.

Sleep has never worked on this computer, with any version of ubuntu. It
works with win*****s though

I have never seen a flashing caps lock

I am now running 9.10, and i think that I have run the suspend testing script 
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/SuspendResumeTesting)
and it failed in the same way, but am not sure. I will do some debugging as 
suggested later.
