I have encountered this bug on dapper, edgy and now also on feisty herd 5. My hardware is an Nvidia GeForceFX 5700 with a CMV CT-722D monitor.
My tft is capable of 1280x1024 but ubuntu only sets it to 1024x768. Running sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg and choosing the correct resolutions fixes the problem.
