It sort of fixed it self, there seems to be an issue with the latest KDE 4.4 upgrade, had similar problem with my laptops, one is a Dell Inspiron 1000, the other an Inspiron 1545. kpackageKit crashes or freezes, If I reboot the upgrade finishes, sometimes I have to run dkpg --configure -a. The only annoyance was it loaded a double desktop on top of each other. I fixed by right clicking on the desktop and selecting "Remove this desktop activity". I had to do that step about 3 times, then re-set my desktop widgets again.
