I had this problem too. But with a self compiled 2.6.32.8 vanilla kernel this E122 stick is shown with 'lsusb' as 'Bus 001 Device 008: ID 12d1:1001 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E620 USB Modem' and it works (also with the NetworkManager).
