Disable the nvidia-vdpau ppa in System -> Administration -> Software Sources -> Other Software. Then, make sure the restricted option is checked under the Ubuntu Software tab. It should ask you to reload the package state, so click OK. Then try System -> Administration -> Hardware drivers and see if that works.
