Public bug reported: I just updated my ubuntu karmic with the update manager. After the update was finished, it told me to close all firefox instances, which I did. Then the firefox icon in my panel was gone and instead there was only a black rectangle. When I tried to remove the aplet (in order to re-add it, hoping this would solve the missing icon problem), an error message appeared, saying that a string was expected(?)). Now for the really bad part: After dismissing this error dialogue, ALL my custom applets disappeared! There were some standard app-launching applets, and some drawers and some custom app-starters. They are all gone now and I dont know how to restore them! Understandingly, I am really angry about that. Restoring all those applets manually will take some serious time.
Is there any backup? Where are the applets stored and how can I find out what happened to them? It seems to me, that this is just a very serious variant of a more general bug, as lots of people where constantly complaining about vanishing applets and broken icons. And not only the custom ones are gone, also the "Places" and the "System" applet is not there anymore! Please, at least tell me why this happened and how I can manually make a backup of my applet configuration before doing an update, so this will never happen again. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: applet disappear gnome icons panel update update-manager vanish -- custom applets in panel disappear after update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/522555 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
