Do you actually have DKMS installed?

If not, I think we need to look into an upgrade hook for update-manager
that will detect a situation that the user had DKMS installed, but
didn't purge it.  This problem is fixed in current versions of DKMS, but
you will never get such versions because it's not fully installed.
