Just for some additional info, I had previously performed a Lucid update, and also installed the Sugar package when I noticed this problem occurring. So cannot be sure whether it was Lucid or Sugar that caused the problem. I have since re-installed Linux to correct the problem. if no definitive answer can be found, happy for this to be closed as a one off incident. Many thanks.
