This is still a problem, using Kubuntu 9.10 (fully updated) and a HP Laserjet 1320tn.
I tried various Pdf programs (Kpdf, xpdf, adobe reader), but the error persists, i assume they all use lpr. Before, i used Kubuntu 8.04, there i had this problem only with kpdf. other programs would print normally IIRC.
