Very little to report, but here it is:

Just before the latest kernel upgrade, I was able to get 2.6.31.17 to
load normally. Then, 2.6.31-19-generic came along and was also working
perfectly... for less than a week. I have no idea what change allowed
the newer kernels to start up, nor what subsequent change undid that
progress. And, as I've stated numerous times in this thread, until
someone - anyone - says hello and asks me to follow some simple
instruction, I won't know where to begin.

For now I am still having to load kernel 2.6.31.14, and still wondering
if Fedora or Windows 7 isn't a possible alternative. I thank anyone who
responds in advance once again.
