Had the same problems on my wife's laptop, a Dell XPS 1530 (Intel CPU, Lucid 64bit, NVidia GForce 8600M GT card). Uninstalling Plymouth seems to have solved it for now (although I think that is not what the devs of Plymouth aimed for...). Thanx for the information guys.
