It seems this is quite a big and widely affecting nasty bug. With NVidia you get the <enter> freeze, not much more, but with Intel and ATI you get freeze during boot etc. and that one is reported here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/plymouth/+bug/510524
