Jannis, actually the Arch-linux Gnome problem is a different issue, nothing to do with plymouth.
Those having a Nvidia graphics card really should use Nvidia proprietary drivers (nvidia-current). And in fact what plymouth is for the time being, it is pretty useless with Nvidia. I think it is better to remove the package plymouth from lucid, the problems will disappear. Then you can upgrade the package libplymouth2.
