The new profile that you've created _is_  the Default Ubuntu profile.

The problem you experienced might have been caused due to some error during the 
update. 
But I'm not sure what the cause is , and since the problem is not reproducible 
it would be difficult to find and fix the problem.

It would be easier if you migrated all your personal information[bookmarks, 
passwords, add-ons ] to the new profile.
If you google "Backup firefox ___ "you will find this information to backup and 
restore all your settings. ex: 
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Backing+up+and+restoring+bookmarks
