Uninstalling plymouth made the bug disappear. Two related bugs disappeared as well: 1) I'm no longer experiencing graphical corruption (flickering pixels) along the top edge of the screen. 2) Previously, when GDM came up on my Nvidia Twinview setup (two monitors), only the primary screen would work, whereas the secondary monitor just gave me an "out of range" message. The workaround was a quick switch to a TTY and back again. With Plymouth gone, both screens now work immediately.
Should I file separate bugs?
