With a fresh karmic kubuntu, I installed the package phonon-backend- gstreamer (which installed other gstreamer dependences) and videos whose codec (gstreamer0.10-...) is installed are displayed in the slideshow. The toolbar Media player with media buttons does not work, I suppose this is a java player (-->com.sun.star.media.Manager_GStreamer uno reference).
