Found problem is in video driver. Have Mobility Raid x300. Needs shared memory. I went to install the proprietary video driver from the ATI web and the first part is that POSIX must be installed. Looked at Ubuntu forum http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=122712 As soon as I installed the shared memory the problem stopped. Other people with mobility Raid and shared memory may also have this problem where the non-proprietary driver needs shared memory to work correctly.
