It seems you are right that the EDID is not always detected. In
XorgLog.txt the information is there, but in XorgLogOld.txt it isn't.
According to the logs you have an DELL E1909WDD connected via
DisplayPort. Is that correct? Does the problem go away if you connect
the monitor by other means (VGA, DVI, HDMI, etc.)? I think I have seen
some updates to the EDID fetching code in the kernel lately. Could you
try the 2.6.31-rc5 kernel from https://launchpad.net/~xorg-
edgers/+archive/ppa (see also
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds) and see if the
problem is still present there?
