Further relevant information: 1. Now I've got into ubuntu 9.10 Live CD properly using acpi=off, I've run the "system test" application and one of the video test fails (the test entitled "do you see color bars and static?". I've raised this separately as bug 513998. 2. I've found out that even the Ubuntu Live CD version 9.04 crashes after an hour or so of usage, with the same symptoms as this bug.
