I have this same experience with "system lockup." In my case, there are
no changes to the screen from whatever desktop was in use. My panel
clock shows seconds and the numbers stop changing. I become aware of the
lockup when I cannot move the mouse cursor. In addition, I cannot make
the "kernel magic keys" work to gather any information, nor can I use
the CTRL-ALT-F[1-6] to switch away from X11 to a console.

Uname -a shows:
Linux mumbles 2.6.31-17-generic-pae #54-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 10 17:23:29 UTC 2009
i686 GNU/Linux

I have made not changes to the kernel config from whatever is deployed
with the distro or through update-manager.

I don't know enough to report anything else.
