I have this same experience with "system lockup." In my case, there are no changes to the screen from whatever desktop was in use. My panel clock shows seconds and the numbers stop changing. I become aware of the lockup when I cannot move the mouse cursor. In addition, I cannot make the "kernel magic keys" work to gather any information, nor can I use the CTRL-ALT-F[1-6] to switch away from X11 to a console.
