Temporary workaround: 1. uninstall Firebug 1.5.x extension from Firefox add-ons menu 2. reinstall Firebug 1.4.x through the Ubuntu apt-get repository: $ sudo apt-get install --reinstall firebug 3. never update the extension when Firefox promts you to update
