I've fixed it for my laptop with compressed air.

I've seen hpet message too. And my laptop would become very slow. I
even measured this slow down. It was alway about x10 times slower or x60
slower. Surprisingly it was still very usable with x10. These
slowdowns were random and intermittent. Sometime it would survive
reboot. This is how I figured it was HW related. I've opened my
hp6910p laptop, and cleaned up motherboard from dust with compressed air
can. No more slowdowns or hpet messages.
