I have the bug on same chipset (Intel Mobile 945GME express integrated rev03) on an asus 1000h. Confirming setting effects to none is a workaround.
Looked through kern.log, syslog, debug, didn't find anything relevant. Can post contents of Xorg.0.log if needed (I don't know as much about reading that one).
