Since I have never tried to install a new kernel version other than as part of
a new version of Ubuntu, it may not be worth trying to guide me through the
process. Nevertheless, following is what I have done so far.
1. I downloaded linux-image-2.6.32-020632-generic_2.6.32-020632_i386.deb from
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32/.
2. When I opened linux-image-2.6.32-020632-generic_2.6.32-020632_i386.deb with
GDebi Package Installer, the Description ended with:
"You likely do not want to install this package directly. Instead, install the
linux-generic meta-package, which will ensure that upgrades work correctly, and
that supporting packages are also installed."
3. When I searched in Synaptic Package Manager for linux-generic meta-package,
I did not see anything that seemed appropriate for version 2.6.32, which was
not a surprise since that version is new.
I do not know how to proceed.
