I also have the problem running 32bit karmic. I have /boot on partition (hd0,2).
Adding manually the line "root=(hd0,2)" to the memtest entry solves the problem.
The linux entries add this line automatically, while the memtest entry does not.
So this seems that "20_memtest86+" in "/etc/grub.d" do not take into account 
the partition where memtest86+ is.
