It could be a hardware failure on your computer. Perhaps the power supply going bad etc.
1) Have you used previous versions of Ubuntu successfully? 2) Does it shut down every time you use it? 3) How long after logging in does it shutdown? To test if it is a hardware issue please use the Ubuntu Live CD choosing "try Ubuntu..." and browse the web like you normally do. 4) Does the problem still occur when using the Live CD? If you have used a previous version of Ubuntu 9.04 or earlier successfully on your computer, you could install that version along beside your current install of Ubuntu 9.10. After logging into the older version test the system by browsing the web. 5) Does the problem still occur when using a previous version of Ubuntu (Ubuntu 9.04 or earlier)? If the problem occurs when using the Ubuntu Live CD and a previous version of Ubuntu then your computer hardware is faulty. If the problem does not occur when testing with the Live CD or a previous version of Ubuntu then it may be a new bug in Ubuntu 9.10.
