It;s not looking like the old option-rich gdm will be back.

For the use cases where you need to tweak GDM I have two options

1) Configure it via text config file - options are explained here:
http://library.gnome.org/admin/gdm/2.28/configuration.html.en#daemonconfig

2) Try the GDM2 Configuration Tool started by the community - seen here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8518160
