No, it is not possible to upgrade only a small part of Karmic. It's fine if you want to stay on Karmic. This kind of breakage sometimes happens in the development version of Ubuntu and if you cannot risk that it might stop working after an upgrade, it is better not to run it. On my laptop I have two partitions. One with Jaunty that I have set up well a long time ago that I use for work, and one with Lucid that I use at home and catch bugs as they appear. Because of this problem my Lucid didn't work for a day or two, but I still could use the computer.
