These are procedural notes I was making to myself on this recent (of many) new installations of Ubuntu:
System: AMD Athlon 64 3000+, Nvidia GeForce 4, 1.5 GB DDR RAM...nothing to brag about, that's for sure, but it was free through some volunteer work :-) New installation of Ubuntu 9.10 ver AMD 64 Update Manager (restart) Hardware Drivers: Nvidia ver 96 Driver 1280x1024 @ 75Hz (restart) Add to Panel: terminal force quit system monitor sticky notes weather Application: Gnome Partition Editor (gparted) Syanptic Package Manager: icedtea6-plugin flashplugin-installer <---------!!!!! geany gcc-multilib (restart) → 3.16MB used Tried Speedtest.net using Firefox, got it to run after hitting the Start Test button a bunch of times, then tried to use another button to answer their questions: in short, the media plays, but the damn buttons don't work, and this is why I've tried numerous fresh installations. (On a previous installation where Flash was semi-working, YouTube vids would play, but I couldn't pause, fullscreen, or interact with the buttons...though if I hit the button at the top-right to watch the video in a new window, I could use the buttons in the new window.) So now I completely uninstalled the flashplugin-installer in synaptic, then went to Adobe for their 9.04+ APT Flash Player, and got the "could not find package 'adobe flash-plugin'" message...however, it does differ from the original Bug Report, because nothing was said about the "installer" package. Somebody please help me so I don't have to go through another bloody installation...this is so frustrating :( Okay...so I actually tried YouTube after all the above, and the buttons work fine there. Opened a fresh new tab for Speedtest, but I still have the same problem...I can get the buttons to work if I hit the mouse button multiple times, but makes me just want to smash the mouse in frustration instead. One might assume that it is Speedtest that I am having the problem with, but it works fine through my other Ubuntu laptop, my XP partition, and another system w/ XP. Could it be that because I tried Speedtest prior to installing Flash, some sort of config file was created that is wreaking havoc now? I ask because I may have tried YouTube prior to installing Flash the last time...and all the other websites seemed to (mostly) work fine as far as the buttons went. So yeah...weird, unsuccessful things keep happening when I try to use Speedtest, but I'm happy to have discovered that my YouTube buttons are working fine...now let's see what happens when I download Chrome-beta ;-)...and can somebody tell me how I can backup and restore so I don't have to keep installing Ubuntu from scratch?
