I had the same problem using 9.10. I found that these suggestions help, but I have seen that anyone has noted that the skinned version of the app (selectable in the preferences) doesn't have this problem. I noticed that if I choose the skinned over the default player setting my video works fine. Also, would like to note that running totem didn't actually make it work 100%. It played sound, but no video was being rendered at all, I say that because I know the difference. If this was windows I'd say there was a direct draw incompatibility. rather weird I think.
