I have the same issue here. it overrides my resolution (1280x1024) and uses the highest available to X (1920x1440). Leaving fullscreen doesn't revert it back to my original setting. I am using: Totem Movie Player 2.17.92 Movie Player using GStreamer 0.10.11 (CVS) and GNOME. It looks like this is in Herd 5 also. Samsung SyncMaster 957MB
