In order to intergrate a system running ubuntu with other systems in a network, it may be wise to make this an easy option to configure. In Solaris, system accounts run from 0-99, and user accounts start at 100. redhat and macos start at 501. When using nfs between existing systems using these other schemes, often users will have numbers lower than 1000. This means trouble if ubuntu tools don't handle those numbers.
