I get the same problem. I'm on Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit upgraded from 9.04. I have another machine with a clean install of 9.10 that doesn't have this problem. After clicking "Do Selected Tasks" the window goes grey and I have to kill the process to close it. I tried restarting it again from the command line afterwards, and all the packages it had been removing were gone now except the last. Tried "Do Selected Tasks" again to see the output. It froze up again, but I waited about 10 mins before killing it this time. This was the terminal output:
