This is immediately after a bootup. It also happens under gnome so I am
switching to KDE so my system is usable.

You can type for hours as long as you stay on the latter keys, as soon
as you press a number on the keyboard the system will run slow for a
while (I'm guessing thats the system working to close some services)
then will reboot.
