I'm also seeing this problem. I get this in my dmesg
ACPI: Failed to switch the brightness

This is my temporary hack for getting the keys working:
http://github.com/zaius/bright

It's definitely not perfect. Especially since the laptop can't put the
screen to sleep after an idle time. But I don't even know where to start
to fix ACPI problems.

The default brightness can also be set by using the fn-brightness keys
while in the bios.
