Thanks a lot for the quick reply, Felix! Looking through my packages, I saw that grub2 was not installed but was at state rc. Strange, I thought that grub2 was installed already given that I installed Karmic, overwriting an existing ext4 root partition (not updating the system via the update mechanism), only keeping my home partition from a previous Jaunty install.
Issuing a sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop did not pull in grub2 as a dependency either. Hence I installed grub2, which pulled in grub-pc. Rebooting and everything is fine now. So I don't know whether this is an expected behavior. I thought that newly installing a system onto an already existing ext4 root partition would use the new grub2.
