in 2.6.31-16-generic I have this messages too... and my laptop (HP HDX-18) boots around in 5-6 minutes. Another thing I found, while booting, if I press Ctrl+Alt+Del for once while getting the "unable to access" messages, it immediately passes the messages by saying "* Asking all the remaining processes to terminate" and boots in normal time...
