Adding disable-lfe-remixing = no fixes problem for me too on Karmic & pulseaudio 0.9.21-0ubuntu3~~karmic~ubuntuaudiodev1 & alsa-base 1.0.20+dfsg-1ubuntu5
Before this I didn't hear anything from my subwoofer (LFE), like in 5.0 configuration.
