I'm in complete agreement here. Running a full install with the language packs results in a lot of unnecessary packages being pulled in. As far as I've observed, it's not just OpenOffice, but OpenJDK as well. This may be a non-issue for the main distro, but when you're dealing with limited space and/or limited bandwidth this becomes a particularly serious issue very quickly.
