I am also unable to print some PDF files from Evince to two HP LaserJet 4500 printers and one ColorJet 3700, which are all through AppSocket/HP JetDirect.
I tried printing a test PDF to those HP printers, and it did not print, but when I printed to an Epson computer (connected through USB), the document printed successfully. I also tried printing the test PDF on a separate, different computer (also Ubuntu 9.10) to the HP printers, and the same printing error occurs. Printing to the HP printers worked with xpdf and Okular, though, and worked perfectly fine on 9.04.
