Running the command you asked for I got the following response on the console.
(I've replaced my username and computer name with [xx] and [yy])

Relating the reported error:
I got the error while I was doing dist upgrade to Karmic.
After the upgrade (and the update manager error) the update manager seems 
working now.
I got some updates installed without any problem.

Please let me know if there are anything else I can help to find the
cause of the problem..
