daves111, look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze for more information about this kind of bug. Especially, we would like batchbuffer dumps. Also, if you can try some older mainline kernels from [1] (see also [2]) and find the first with this problem, that would be useful.
