Thanks for your help. I solved the problem with the repair option in the
safe bood menu. 

The correct image was not installed during the update, I tried to boot
with different images I have but did not work so I did the repair. A new
image was installed and now I am booting fine.

I have apt-get clean & update and works fine but no need to upgrade
because I am working fine now with initrd.img-2.6.31-16-generic wich I
suppose is the one I was upgrading to.
