Machine in question is running Karmic Server. Machine is a Gateway
E-4200, motherboard model E139761. Operating system is on sda, an IDE
drive on the motherboard primary controller. Issue is most easily
reproduced by moving large amounts of data from sdc (SATA drive on the
VIA controller) to sdb (another SATA drive on the VIA controller).
Attached are lspci output and output from hdparm -I on the three drives.
