Same problem here with the SmartLink modem daemon on Ubuntu 9.10 (both upgraded from 9.04 and installed from scratch), on a Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S7020D with an hda-intel card. After reinstalling alsa with the hda-intel option (which is anyway necessary to get the sound working), if I keep the SmartLink daemon installed I cannot neither change volume from the Gnome taskbar, nor find any sound device under gstreamer-properties: audio works but its properties can be changed only via alsamixer.
