Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cryptsetup

Hi,

after experiencing the bug described in Bug #434232, I tried again with a new
setup:

One encrypted data partition which is supposed to be mounted at boot
(contains different folders which are later symlinked for various
purposes).

Manual opening with cryptsetup luksOpen and manual mounting works OK as
expected.

Without adding the "bootwait" option to /etc/fstab, I had the problem with the
X-server starting before the password prompt.
With "bootwait" specified, the boot now waits for the partition, and the
X-server is not started.
The system waits and a message is displayed that the specified partition can
not be mounted yet.

However, still, entering the correct passphrase is not possible for me.

Quoting Pete Phillips
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mountall/+bug/430496/comments/46):
"something appears to be eating my keystrokes"...

Sometimes it displays the passphrase in clear text (displayed with the
wrong, english, C locale, but it also won't work using the english
keyboard layout). But mainly it just doesn't work and displays "enter
passphrase for data3..." and "no key available with this passphrase...".
Also, the prompting message for the passphrase is not displayed
initially and only appears after the first "enter" key press and appears
out-of-phase with the actual input.

It seems as if two processes were using the keyboard input at the same
time.

If I press "ESC" and give the root password for the maintenance shell
(which only works sometimes, too), the shell appears and some commands
work, but there is no key echo on the screen; very strange things
happen...

==> My /etc/fstab entry WITH "bootwait":
/dev/mapper/data3 /data3 ext4 defaults,bootwait 0 2

==> My /etc/crypttab for this setup:
# <target name> <source device> <key file> <options>
data3 /dev/sda5 none luks,cipher=aes-xts-plain
SWAP /dev/sda2 /dev/urandom swap
