Joril, Your problem sounds exactly like the issue I experienced on upgrading to Karmic. It is addressed more specifically by a separate bug report; see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/modemmanager/+bug/421673. The workaround described there (uninstalling modemmanager) solved the problem for me.
