Chris, Since I was a little bit of time this holiday, I decide to make a few changes. I completely removed Openoffice, and I cleaned up the system with BleachBit (as root). I do not know if this is important to mention, but during clean-up I decided to remove all other language library from all applications besides English. Then I rebooted and made a fresh install of OpenOffice. Magically, now the first boot instance of OO takes only 10 seconds. Interestingly, the "free -m" output from a Console shows the same pattern as before, when I got very slow response from OO. I assume it is not a memory allocation problem after all.
