I have this problem on Karmic which was upgraded from Jaunty. I tested a clean installation of Karmic and there is no such problem - keyboard is working after switching to virtual console and back. It seems that there is some issue with upgrade, because on Jaunty there was not such problem also. Maybe the problem is related to some configuration files which was not upgraded cleanly? Please, let me know if you have some ideas of what could be the reason of this issue. I will check it and try to fix with your help. Thanks.
